Blaine woman killed in University Avenue accident had allegedly been shoplifting

A 71-year-old Blaine woman killed when she was struck by a southbound vehicle on University Avenue, Coon Rapids, late Friday night had allegedly just shoplifted items from the Walgreens store at 10686 University Ave. N.W., Coon Rapids.

Coon Rapids Police officers responded to University Avenue at 106th Avenue at 11:23 p.m. Nov. 2 on a report that the driver of a vehicle had struck something, possibly a person, according to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

On arrival, officers found a woman dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old Brooklyn Park man, had stopped and told police that he was driving southbound returning home from work when the accident occurred, the sheriff’s office press release states.

According the Coon Rapids Police report, the driver was cooperative, there was no indication of alcohol, he submitted to a blood test and was released at the scene.

Police alleged that the woman had been seen on the Walgreens’ video surveillance shoplifting health and beauty products from the store, concealing the items as she fled the store.

The woman was apparently running across University Avenue when she was struck by the car, said Capt. Paul Sommer, Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The name of the woman is being withheld until notification of next of kin.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, Coon Rapids Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the accident.
