Kathryn Kueppers was crowned Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen 2013 at the Miss Coon Rapids Scholarship Pageant at Anoka-Ramsey Community College Nov. 17.
Kueppers will represent Coon Rapids at the Miss Minnesota Outstanding Teen Pageant April 6, 2013.
This was Kueppers’ first pageant. “I am so excited,” she said.
Her inspiration to enter the pageant was her mother, who is a former Miss Minnesota (Vicki Plaster Kueppers), according to Kueppers.
Eligibility requirements include between 13 and 17 years of age – Kueppers is 14 – a United States citizen and must live or go to school in Minnesota.
Contestants are evaluated in six areas – private interview, which includes presentation of a platform; scholastic achievement; on-stage question; lifestyle and fitness; talent; and personal appearance/poise in evening wear.
Kueppers’ platform is titled “Happiness is a Gift.” It stresses the importance of the choices that teens make, which can affect their ability to find happiness, according to Kueppers.
“You can choose to be happy,” Kueppers said, who considers herself to be a happy person.
Her talent is singing, in which she performs “Walking in the Air” by Celtic Woman.
Kueppers has been part of a small children’s group, which has recorded songs for Baby Genius International and other smaller record labels.
She also designs earrings, bracelets and necklaces, which she has been selling at craft shows to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network.
Kueppers, who lives in Mendota Heights, is a ninth-grader at St. Agnes School in St. Paul, where she is on the honor roll, a member of the student council and a cheerleader for football and basketball.
In her spare time, she liked to read and write and watch television with her brother, Kueppers said.
