Coon Rapids offers toy drop off sites to benefit families

The city of Coon Rapids has teamed up with Toys for Joy and Toys for Tots to help families in need this holiday season.

The public can donate a new, unwrapped toy to either organization at one of three city drop sites.

Toys for Joy donations help people in Anoka County. Toys for Tots donations benefit families throughout the metro area.

The city is providing two toy collection sites for Toys for Joy.

One is the Coon Rapids Civic Center, 11155 Robinson Drive N.W., where toy collection boxes are located near in the front lobby and at the civic center. Collection times are during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The second Toys for Joy drop off location is at Bunker Hills Golf Club and The Harvest Grill Restaurant, 12800 Bunker Prairie Drive.

Toy collection boxes are located in the main entrance of the restaurant and at the golf pro shop.

Times are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The golf shop opens at 8 a.m., the restaurant opens at 11 a.m.

The Harvest Grill will provide a coupon for a free appetizer with the purchase of an entrée, for every toy dropped off.

Toy collection for both locations continues through Monday, Dec. 17.

Toys for Joy, which is made possible by volunteers with the St. Paul Area Association of Realtors (formerly the North Metro Realtors Association), has a long history of teaming up with the Christmas Committee, a volunteer group in Anoka County, to provide toys and food to Anoka County families in need during the holidays.

Families can choose to participate in the program if they received a form in the mail, or if they work with one of several Anoka County service agencies.

Toys and food are distributed each year at the Anoka Armory approximately one week before the holidays.

Toys for Tots donations can be delivered to the Coon Rapids Ice Center, 11000 Crooked Lake Blvd.

The collection box is located near the front desk with collection times Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Toy collection continues through the end of day Saturday, Dec. 15.

The Coon Rapids Ice Center will give out a free public skating pass for each toy donated.

This pass can be used at any public skating session in December or January, or the pass can be entered into a drawing to win a free season pass to stick and puck (skating, stick handling and shooting) or public skating.

Toys for Tots is a program created by the U.S. Marine Corps. It operates in 700 communities in all 50 states.

According to Toys for Tots, its mission is to help bring the joy of Christmas to children all over the nation.
