Anoka Middle School players dive ‘under the sea’ for holiday show

Anoka Middle School for the Arts presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” for its holiday show. The fantasy production opens this weekend.
Jefferson Fietek directs a cast of 35 and a crew of 20 middle-schoolers.

“This is a family friendly production that brings all the magic and wonder of the original animated film to life on stage,” Fietek said.

The story centers on beautiful young mermaid Ariel who longs to leave her ocean home and live in earthly environs. But she meets obstacles in fulfilling her dream. She must defy her father King Triton, deal with evil sea witch Ursula and convince Prince Eric that she is the girl with the enchanting voice and the girl who saved his life.

“This bright production full of catchy tunes and big dance numbers will bring a smile to anyone’s face this holiday season,” Fietek said.

The musical is adapted from the Disney animated film and features such songs as “Part of Your World,” “She’s in Love” and “Under the Sea.”

Music is by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater. Based on a book by Doug Wright.

Benjamin Lacina directs the music, while Brianna Belland is choreographer for the production.

Anoka Middle School for the Arts presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” Dec. 7 (ASL interpreted), 8, 14 and 15, 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 9 and 16, 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors/students. The Fred Moore Campus is located at 1523 Fifth Ave. S., Anoka. Tickets may be purchased at the door or call 763-506-3667.
