Registration is now open for the second annual Blaine Triathlon.
The event will once again be on the third Saturday of May. It begins at 8 a.m. May 18, 2013 at Lakeside Commons Park, located at 3020 Lakes Parkway.
Over 350 athletes participated in the inaugural event last May.
The race, which is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, includes a 0.3 mile swim, a 16.7 mile bike ride and a 3.5 mile run, according to Nate Monahan, program supervisor for the Blaine Parks and Recreation Department.
Those who wish to do so can register up two or three individuals for a relay team, so individuals on the team can decide who will compete in the swimming, biking and running legs of the competition.
Monahan said the goal is to get more people to participate.
“With the options of an individual racer or relay teams, it maximizes participation for many different age and ability levels,” he said.
The registration fee for individuals is $75 while the relay team registration is $100. Each registered participant will receive a dry fit race T-shirt, swim cap and refreshments after the race. All finishers will receive official race hardware.
An awards ceremony following the competition will recognize the top three finishers in each age category and the top two teams in each age category.
According to Monahan, enthusiastic volunteers are needed for a wide range of duties.
Community businesses and organizations are welcome to be event sponsors. There are currently nine sponsors for next year’s triathlon.
