Coon Rapids HS students build bears, donate to Mercy Hospital

Members of three Coon Rapids High School student organizations – FCCLA, DECA and HOSA – pooled their time, their energy and their resources and made 84 teddy bears which were donated to Mercy Hospital’s maternity ward and pediatrics unit.

The project was dreamed up and organized by FCCLA member Carmen White (front row, right) who volunteers in the hospital’s emergency room and intends to pursue a career in pediatrics after completing her high school and college education.

“I just knew Mercy would appreciate the bears and building bears is fun,” White said. Pictured here are representatives of each of the three student organizations. To complete the project, each of the 84 members of the organizations donated $28, traveled to the Build-a-Bear workshop at the Mall of America and created a bear representing a favorite activity, occupation or cartoon character.

When completed, bears took on the personalities of Major League Baseball players, Coon Rapids Cardinals cheerleaders, military personnel, prom queens, Winnie the Pooh characters, cowboys, space invaders, astronauts and more.

“I just know kids will love them and Mercy will be so glad to give them to their littlest patients,” White said.
