Andover alpine took part in the fifth annual Martin Luther King Invite at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik Jan. 19.
The holiday weekend races were hosted by Virginia and Hibbing High Schools and included morning and afternoon races.
Andover girls placed sixth in the morning session, seven points behind fifth-place Apple Valley/Rosemount and 20 points ahead of seventh-place Hibbing.
Erica Copland led the way with a fifth-place finish in 1:31.20 while Courtney Schwartz posted the third quickest time on the first run of 44.43 but stumbled on the second run to place 16th overall. Cailana Kadlec was 33rd and Maggie Salmi finished 37th to complete the team scoring.
Andover boys finished 27 points behind morning race champion Forest Lake as the four scoring Huskies placed among the top 18 spots. JJ Corn turned in a second place overall time of 1:27.95, trailing only Forest Lake standout Jacob Bush by 0.74 of a second.
Andover’s Jared Silewski was 12th, Jake Majors was 15th and Tyler Bramm was 18th to complete the team scoring. OMG placed third, 12 points behind the Huskies.
The Andover boys parlayed the successful morning vibes into a team championship, scoring 340 points or 17 points clear of Forest Lake.
Andover placed its four scoring skiers among the top 16 individuals including Corn’s fourth-place and Majors’ fifth-place finishes.
Silewski placed 11th and Ross Ruder was 16th.
Andover girls finished fourth in the afternoon or Sunset race, 22 points behind third place Forest Lake and 30 points behind champion Brainerd.
Schwartz turned in another stellar run with a blistering fast second run to post the second best time in the race of 1:33.57 or 2.26 seconds behind St. Cloud champion Molly Magnuson. Andover’s Aly Olson was 21st, Hailey Hetterick was 23rd and Kadlec was 32nd.
