Five men were arrested Jan. 9 in a prostitution sting operation conducted by the Coon Rapids Police Department at a motel in the city.
This was the second such police sting operation in the past two months.
It was part of an ongoing effort to dissuade prostitution activities in Coon Rapids, according to Coon Rapids Police Capt. John Hattstrom.
“We don’t want that kind of activity in the city,” Hattstrom said.
Prostitution can lead to other crimes, such robberies and assaults, which when they occur tend to be under-reported by the victims, he said.
The Jan. 9 operation involving a female Coon Rapids Police officer working undercover took place at a different motel from November, according to Det. Sgt. Jon Urquhart.
The police department, as in November, placed an advertisement in the “Escort” section on the Backpage.com website, Urquhart said.
The sting operation was set up with the cooperation of the motel staff with both uniformed and plain clothed police officers involved.
The five men arrested came from all over the Twin Cities – Brooklyn Park, New Brighton, Eagan, Champlin and Bethel – and ranged in age from 18 to 55.
They were all booked at the Anoka County Jail on a gross misdemeanor gross misdemeanor prostitution charge and released after being given a court date, Urquhart said.
