Curling classes, leagues added to meet demand at Fogerty

Interest in curling is high at North America’s first year-round, dedicated curling facility, located at Fogerty Arena in Blaine. So high, in fact, that the Four Seasons Curling Club is adding more learn-to-curl classes and low-cost, four-week instructional leagues.

When the facility’s doors opened the first week of January, more than 400 people took advantage of learn-to-curl classes or the inaugural instructional league.

The initial response was encouraging, said Mark Clasen, general manager for Fogerty Arena.

“For the years that our volunteer board worked on this project, we kept envisioning all ages and abilities side by side on the ice and that’s just what we saw opening week,” Clasen said. “Now, we’re adding more educational opportunities to enable more people to check us out.”

Learn-to-curl classes will be offered at 6 p.m., Sunday evenings, Feb. 10, 17 and 24 and March 3 and 10. The number of participants is limited to 24 per session. Anyone aged six or older is eligible. The cost is $10 per person. All equipment is provided. Registration is required and can be done online at www.FourSeasonsCurlingClub.com or by calling 763-780-3328.

Each learn-to-curl lesson is a two-hour introduction and instructional session that teaches the basics of curling. It’s very hands-on, according to John Benton, Fogerty’s director of curling and member of the USA 2010 Olympic curling team.

“Within minutes, participants will be throwing rocks and sweeping,” Benton said. “We’ll likely finish the session playing a mini game.”

Four-week instructional leagues will be offered Fridays in April, May and June.

The cost is $75 per league. A $10 discount will be available to people who paid for the learn-to-curl class. All equipment will be provided.

The Four Seasons Curling Club also offers numerous leagues for varying levels of skill, from novice to Olympian. For information go to www.FourSeasonsCurlingClub.com or call 763-780-3328.

The Four Seasons Curling Club is located at Fogerty Arena, 9520 Lincoln St. N.E., Blaine.
