Tornadoes cap a perfect NWSC season with title

Anoka finished a perfect 10-0 record to win the Northwest Suburban Conference title after posting a  71-6 win against Armstrong Jan. 24.

The Tornadoes closed out its regular season dual schedule with a 41-19 win against Farmington at the Zimmerman Triangular Feb. 8.

The Tigers won the first four matches before Anoka’s Preston Flaherty earned an 8-6 decision at 138 pounds. His win triggered nine straight Tornado wins including falls by Connor Larsen (152), Royce Myren (182), Jake Olson (195) and Jeremy Rodman (220).

The Tornadoes went 1-2 at the Anoka Tornadoes Duals Feb. 2, losing the third-place match to Little Falls 37-35. Anoka led by four points heading into the final match but Flyers heavyweight Connor Swanson scored a six-point pin in 59 seconds against Jesse Heifort in what proved to be the difference.

Anoka started with a 32-27 win against St. Francis before Hastings downed the Tornadoes 46-25 in the semifinals. Brandon Krone (152) and Larsen scored back-to-back pins at 1:20 and 26 seconds, respectively. St. Francis’ Conan Sandberg (220) scored a 10-2 major decision against Anoka’s Jeremy Rodman and Adam Blue (285) pinned Heifort at 2:59 to finish the match.

Cambridge-Isanti handed Hastings a 37-20 defeat in the championship match.

St. Francis went 1-2, topping Andover in the consolation semifinal 55-18 keyed by Sandberg’s pin of Dakota Hauk in 22 seconds at 220 pounds and Saints’ 160-pounder Taylor Charles scored a pin against Adam Bulver in 32 seconds. Willmar scored a 43-15 win in the fifth-place match. Andover captured seventh place with a 54-18 win over All-Stars.

• Coon Rapids wrapped up the Northwest Suburban Conference schedule with a 59-9 win against Park Center Feb. 7 and followed that with a 40-21 loss to No. 3 (Class AA) Foley in Coon Rapids on Alumni Night Feb. 8.

More than 250 people showed their support for the Cardinals program, which celebrated its 50th season with a social after the meet.

JV Conference recap

Coon Rapids placed second at the Northwest Suburban Conference JV meet, Feb. 9, as Jordan Peterson won the title at 126 pounds, Kyle Eilola won at 138 pounds and Alex Calderilla at 182 pounds.

Andover’s Hunter Wathen edged Coon Rapids’ Jesse Macklin in overtime 4-2 at 132 pounds.

Anoka’s Hunter DeLeon won at 145 pounds, Noah Valliant won at 152.
