A Ham Lake author has published her first action adventure book, “Concealed in the Shadows.”
Gabrielle Arrowsmith’s young adult novel centers on 18-year-old Sydney Harter, desperate to protect and make a better life for her sister.
Set in the future, 2033, in fictional Miles County, Mont., with mandatory citizen chip implants and powers by the higher-ups to track their every move, the sisters risk their lives to escape oppressive and conniving county leaders.
“I think it’s very thought-provoking and it’s a family story,” Arrowsmith said.
Arrowsmith said the book, similar to “The Hunger Games,” has a strong crossover appeal to adults as well as teens.
A 2006 graduate from Blaine High School, Arrowsmith has enjoyed writing from a young age.
While her dad wanted his daughter to be off playing soccer somewhere, “I was always off in a corner writing a book,” Arrowsmith said.
Arrowsmith graduated summa cum laude from the College of St. Scholastic, Duluth, where she earned a degree in education. In addition to marketing her book, she is now a substitute teacher in the Anoka-Hennepin School District.
For Arrowsmith, the best part of writing is being able to express herself in a creative manner and to pass along stories with meaning.
A challenging part of her craft was the editing process, she said. “Concealed” took her four months to write and about five months and five rewrites to edit and format.
Arrowsmith hopes to parlay her first book into either a sequel or a trilogy.
“I think it’s a really good story,” she said. “I want to share it with as many people as I can.”
