Annual home and garden show introduces new trends

A steady stream of people wandered through the 15th annual North Metro Home and Garden Show Feb. 23.

Some were looking for ideas on how to spruce up their existing homes as they walked around the National Sports Center, while others were looking for ways to improve their landscaping.

The show, sponsored by cities of Blaine, Fridley and Mounds View as well as Renewal by Anderson, Trio Landscaping and Western Remodelers, offered nearly 402 booths to explore and eight seminars on landscaping, remodeling and decorating.

During the seminars, people learned about options to create a new-look kitchen, from resurfacing their cabinets to completely gutting the kitchen to create a new layout, from David Drenckpohl of Home Depot.

Drenckpohl gave attendees an idea of how long the projects could take, a few days to six to 11 weeks, and a general price, up to $4,285 to completely redo a kitchen.

Home Depot has three different ways to give kitchens a new look, from refacing the cabinets, the least expensive and least time commitment with a cost of about 5 cents a foot, to renewing existing wood cabinets, about 10 cents, Drenckpohl said.

“Refacing is really popular. The cost is in the middle and it gives them a new style cabinets and new style drawers,” he said.

They get an upgraded kitchen at a faction of the cost, Drenckpohl said.

A lot of people redo their wood tone cabinets with white cabinets to lighten up their kitchens, he said.

Drenckpohl is also seeing a demand for bamboo.

Bamboo is one of the more popular materials because it is a renewable resource, he said.

Sherwin Williams Company gave people ideas on what they can do with colors.

The new colors this year, inspired by the fashion runways, include the dark and shadowy that recall the 1920s noir, the nature inspired tones of the honey vitality line, a soft look of vintage moxie that recalls the 1960s or the dangerous look of high voltage neons, said Jacob Babcock, Robbinsdale store manager.

Picking a color or two from the new color trends can add interest to the home, he said.

In the past it was about selecting colors that matched or coordinated, but this year the theme is finding contradictory colors, Babcock said,

“You want dramatic and contrasts, he said.

“There is no reason to live in a boring home.”

Babcock also introduced faux impressions and showed how it is used to refresh damaged popcorn ceilings.

The trends for landscaping have remained the same, according to the landscapers of Gardens of Rice Creek, Minneapolis.

People still want outdoor doors with grills, fireplaces and lots of outdoor seating, said Wayne Liepke.

Water features are also a great way to draw people outside, said Jeff Chudek of Inspired Design Landscaping, Inc. of Columbia Heights.

While the brick patio is great, the water feature gives people a reason to go out and enjoy the patio, he said.
