New Blaine hair salon owner fulfilling lifelong dream

Brea Parks has wanted to own a hair salon ever since she was a kid watching her mother cut the hair of family and friends in the basement of their Coon Rapids home. Her dream recently came true.

Parks opened the Razzl Dazzl Hair Salon in Blaine at 1025 109th Ave. N.E. in mid-February. The business employs 12 stylists with another one on the way, and it sells a few different women’s shampoo, conditioner and hair spray brands such as A.G. Hair Cosmetics, Kenra Professional and Aquage and it sells American Crew products for the guys.

From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, customers can stop in to get their hair cut the way they have always had it done or ask a stylist for some advice. The business also does manicures and pedicures.

For Parks, the biggest perks of her job are having good conversation and laughing with the customers and being able to change somebody’s appearance with a new hair style.

“It’s a fun atmosphere with lots of laughing because we all get along so great,” Parks said.

One of the first employees you will see is Parks’ receptionist and mother Mickey Parks.

After Mickey retired from Qwest, she went to beauty school to save money on hair cuts for her husband and two daughters. Over time, some of her former Qwest co-workers and other family members would stop by the Parks’ Coon Rapids home to get their hair cut.

At the same time, Brea would be cutting the hair of her Barbie dolls. She ended up with many bald dolls.

Brea eventually went to school to learn hair styling techniques and rented a chair at a salon for the past 15 years before she decided it was time to fulfill her childhood dream.

Brea leased a space in a Blaine shopping center and her family helped tear down walls to open up space, put in the flooring, update the plumbing to meet their specific needs, paint the walls, decorate, finish the cabinets after their cabinet maker had a heart attack and much more. They started the renovation last November and worked on weekends up until opening day in February.
