Floral designer Heidi Brady stood on stage, imagining how the box of pussy willows, tulips and irises could be arranged with a cardboard box to illustrate the theme, “Thinking In and Out of the Box.”
Time was ticking away. Competitors were putting their designs together. Minneapolis Home and Garden Show audience members watched every move.
Brady thought fast and moved with precision and grace, cutting the box, arranging the flowers, manipulating the red wire and mesh and carefully placing polka-dotted branches.
And then, when the 20-minute time limit had ended – judges examined and critiqued each of the six competitors’ arrangements and awarded the 2013 Floral Artist of the Year Award to Brady.
“It was very unnerving and I’m very happy to have won,” said Brady.
Brady, a member of Forever Floral’s design team for the past 10 years, is a frequent award winner, having taken home two championships, two runners-up and one third-place prize in various floral designer competitions in the past decade.
Most recently, Brady finished as first runner-up in the Koehler & Dramm Wholesale Florist’s Designer Showcase competition in January.
That finish earned her a place in the Home and Garden Show contest.
Next up for Brady and her design team cohorts at Forever Floral is the busy spring season with Easter and prom, weddings, graduation, birthday parties and more.
