North Suburban captures first state floor hockey crown

North Suburban CI adapted hockey can add state champions to its list of achievements as the Cougars clinched the CI Division state title in a thrilling 6-5 championship game win against Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville at Bloomington Jefferson High School March 16.

The win is a fitting end of the season for the Cougars, who posted a 14-1 record and finished with 13 straight wins.

Tyler Engel collected a hat trick, Anthony Bengston added two goals and two assists and Cody Jacobsen had one goal and three assists to help the Cougars win their first state title. North Suburban goalie Kody Blatt made 26 saves and was also named to the all-tournament team.

The top seed in the north opened the tournament with a 14-3 win against No. 4 Winona, then disposed of No. 2 south seed Dakota United 7-5 to reach the finals.

Engel, a junior center, scored nine times in the opening win, while Bengston had two goals with eight assists.

Engel added four goals against Dakota United and Blatt turned away 32 shots in the semifinal win.

Engel led the team with 57 goals and 80 points, Bengston had 26 goals and 49 points and Jacobson had 15 goals and 38 points to round out the top three scores this season.
