Coon Rapids Lions gear up for spring golf event

The Coon Rapids Lions Club’s fifth annual spring classic golf tournament and dinner will take place at the Bunker Hills Golf Course Sunday, June 16.

Registration is at 10:30 a.m. with the tournament starting promptly at 11:30 a.m.

“This best-ball golf tournament has proven to be a popular one, due to the location of the event and for the causes surrounding this fund-raiser,” said Lyle Golf, Coon Rapids Lions Club public relations chairperson.

The funds raised at this year’s tournament will support the various community and Lions projects such as ACBC Food Shelf, Alexandra House, Element Teen Center, Feed My Starving Children, Mercy Hospital Wellness Van, Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, TLC Toys, Can-Do Canines, camps and Scouting, according to Goff.

The club has decided to also dedicate some of the funds to its annual Books for BANGO project, which takes place in the nine elementary schools in the area each year.

The club provides the funds for new, age-appropriate books that are purchased by the PTO groups or school activity coordinators. They are then distributed to the students by playing a game of BANGO that the Lions host during the school day for each class.

The result of this game is that every child at the schools will receive at least one new book each year for them to keep as their own, according to Goff.

Over the past 17 years this program has been in place, the club has distributed tens of thousands of free books to the students in the schools, Goff said.

The event will include the golf tournament and an awards dinner, including a silent auction.

The tournament fees for golf and the award dinner have been reduced this year to $85 for an individual or $340 for a foursome.

“The Lions hope this price change will help encourage attendees to get their reservations in early this year,” Goff said.

The club is currently looking for sponsorships, auction items and attendees for the spring classic, according to Goff.

Local businesses and companies are being asked to provide support in the form of cash donations, gift items, gift certificates or other forms of financial support, Goff said.

Participants in the golf tournament, the awards dinner or both activities are being sought by the Lions as well, he said.
