Deputy rescues Andover man from pond Thursday morning

An Andover man was rescued from a pond early Thursday morning (April 11) after his vehicle slid off the road.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle that Zach Steven Fritz, 19, was driving slid off the icy road on the southeast corner of Bunker Lake and Crosstown boulevards in Andover. The vehicle went through a fence and into a pond.

Authorities responded at 6:02 a.m.

Cmdr. Paul Sommer of the sheriff’s office said Fritz escaped the vehicle, but he was struggling to stay afloat in the water.

Sheriff’s office deputy Chris Pierro jumped into the frigid water to swim to Fritz and pull him to shore where Allina Paramedics and the Andover Fire Department gave aid.

Fritz was transported to Mercy Hospital, according to Sommer. Pierro did not require any treatment.
