Four times a year the Coon Rapids VFW Auxiliary hosts a lunch for residents of Camilia Rose Convalescent Center and clients of its adult day care programs in both Coon Rapids and Fridley.
More than 50 seniors from Camilia Rose were treated to a lunch of chicken kiev, rice pilaf, green beans, roll, cupcake, a jello salad, a treat cup and plenty of coffee April 2.
This was the first lunch of 2013, according to Tami Meyers, who leads the VFW Auxiliary cooking crew.
Not only do the VFW Auxiliary members cook and provide the dinner, they also entertain the seniors with games of bingo following the meal, complete with cash prizes.
Donna Guenther was the caller April 2 pinch hitting for Barb Shereck, who is the usual caller, but was out of town, Meyers said.
This has been an ongoing project of the VFW Auxiliary for more than 30 years, she said.
Preparation of the meal begins two days before the dinner is served when the cupcakes are made as well as the jello salad.
“The seniors really appreciate the lunch and it’s a lot of fun for us,” Meyers said.
A dozen auxiliary members work the event.
