Anoka County is seeking a federal grant to reconstruct a portion of the Rice Creek West Regional Trail.
On the recommendation of County Commissioner Jim Kordiak, chairman of the Anoka County Parks and Recreation Committee, the board approved the submission of a grant application to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for a federal recreation trail grant.
According to Kordiak, the project would reconstruct and repair the Rice Creek West Regional Trail underpass on East River Road in Fridley.
“The underpass is in disrepair due to the seasonal fluctuations and water velocity of Rice Creek,” Kordiak wrote in a memo to his fellow county board members.
“The rip rap and aggregate base of the trail has eroded to the point that the trail should be reconstructed to withstand the fluctuations of the creek.”
The cost of the trail repair is estimated at $300,000. If approved, the federal recreation trail grant would pay half the cost with the balance coming from a regional parks and trails legacy grant.
According to Kordiak, if the federal grant is approved, design and engineering would begin late this year with construction in the fall of 2014.
“It’s in our best interests to capture this grant opportunity if we can,” Kordiak said.
