Andover man charged with illegally possessing shotguns

An Andover man with a felony conviction on his record has been charged in Anoka County District Court with illegally possessing two shotguns.

Anthony Robert Thompson, 2525 138th Ave. N.W., was arraigned April 15 on two felony charges of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Thompson was convicted in 1990 in Hennepin County District Court of a felony controlled substance sale crime in the first degree charge, according to the Anoka County criminal complaint.

The Anoka-Hennepin Drug Task Force allegedly found two shotguns in his bedroom while executing an April 11 search warrant.

Thompson allegedly said during a post-Miranda statement that he kept the Winchester youth model 20-gauge shotgun at the head of his bed, underneath the head frame, but that he just left it there after the previous homeowner moved out.

A 20-year-old woman who was also in the room at the time the drug task force came to the Andover home said she had purchased the Mossberg 20-gauge shotgun that was found in the bedroom closet, but was unaware of the other shotguns that authorities found, according to the complaint.

Authorities also located 30 grams of marijuana in the bedroom, which Thompson allegedly admitted was his.

Thompson’s next court appearance is May 13.
