Ramsey sets special election for vacancy

Ramsey will hold a special election July 30 to fill the vacant Ward 1 council seat.

The Ramsey city Council May 7 unanimously declared the Ward 1 seat vacant and set the special election to fill Ward 1 Councilmember David Elvig’s remaining term, which ends Dec. 31, 2014.

Elvig resigned April 23, five days after an Anoka County District Court jury found him guilty of two felony counts of theft by swindle.

The criminal case involved Elvig’s personal business, E-Street Makers.

According to the criminal complaint, Elvig embezzled $19,596.83 from his employees’ 401(k) profit sharing, group health and dental plans, from April 23, 2009 to Jan. 14, 2010.

The investigation found that Elvig kept the contributions in E-Street’s general operating account and used it to pay business expenses, such as payroll, instead of applying it to the three employee plans for up to 15 employees.

Candidates can file for the Ward 1 vacancy from May 24 through June 7 at the Ramsey Municipal Center, 7550 Sunwood Drive N.W. The cost is $5.

There will be no primary for this election.
