Andover’s fourth annual citywide garage sale is this Thursday, May 16 through Saturday, May 18.
A total of 174 households signed up to be on the city’s listing, which is posted on the city’s website (www.andovermn.gov). Those sales run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, according to Dana Makinen, human resources manager for the city of Andover and organizer of this garage sale event since its inception in 2010.
Eleven more will be at the Andover YMCA/Community Center field house Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the first year Andover has tried an indoor garage sale during the citywide garage sale event. Cindy Ramseier, a city of Andover employee who is the administrative assistant for the community center, said they wanted to give people a place to display items without worrying about the weather or creating a mess at their house.
Ramseier is not sure why registration was so low. The late spring and cool weather may have played a factor or it may just be because new things can take time to get started up. This community facility gets a lot of foot traffic, so she hopes a lot of people will visit the sale booths.
Makinen said some residents were confused about the indoor garage sale only being on Saturday. Ramseier said the YMCA uses the field house on weekdays for its programming.
Another factor could have been that the indoor garage sale participants had to pay $20 for a 10 foot by 10 foot booth up to $60 if they needed three of those booths. They would also be charged to use tables and chairs if they could not bring their own. Andover residents paid nothing if they had the garage sale at their own home and just wanted to be listed in the city’s directory.
