Championship qualifying is under way for Minnesota Golf Association events as The Refuge Golf Club in Oak Grove and Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley hosted qualifying events May 20 for the 35th MGA Players Championship (June 24-26 at Interlachen Country Club, Edina), 14th MGA Senior Players and seventh MGA Mid-Players Championship (June 18-20 at Island View Golf Club, Waconia).
John Butler, playing out of The Links at Northfork, not only qualified for the players championship but earned medalist honors with a two-over-par, 74. His 36 on the front nine tied for the lowest on the day, while he followed that with a 38 on the back nine.
Mid-players qualifiers were Ben John Egart and Joel B. Johnson both of The Links at Northfork. Egart carded a four-under 68 to edge Johnson by one stroke for medalist honors. They were the lone mid-players qualifiers.
Rick Sandretto of Boulder Pointe Golf Club led the senior players standings. David Mark Anderson of Midland Hills secured the other qualifying spot, winning a tie-breaker against Bunker Hills’ Bill Tadewald, who is the first alternate.
Concordia Univeristy freshman Nick Auman (Spring Lake Park) earned his place in the MGA Players’ with a third-place finish at the qualifying event held at Gross National Golf Club May 21. Auman, playing out of The Links at Northfork, carded a three-over-par 74 to secure one of five qualifying spots.
