The Blaine City Council May 16 approved a $865,617 contract to overlay streets in various parts of the community this summer.
Most of the nine bids came in under City Engineer Jean Keely’s estimate of $925,800. The low bidder and the company the council approved was Northwest Asphalt, Inc. of Shakopee.
Keely said the funding sources for this project are assessments, developer escrows and the city’s pavement management program funds.
Most of the projects are concentrated in older areas of the community west of Highway 65. One area includes Jefferson Street and most city streets west of this road and north of 89th Avenue. Another area includes 118th Avenue west of Jefferson Street, a portion of Jefferson Street just north of 118th and some other city streets northwest of the Jefferson Street and 118th Avenue intersection.
A couple of notable projects east of Highway 65 are within the Town Square development, which includes Blaine City Hall and the Blaine Town Square Apartments, as well as 131st Avenue between Baltimore and Hastings streets and Baltimore Street between 129th and 132nd avenues.
