Elderly couple killed in Ham Lake crash identified

A Stacy couple was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Lexington Avenue in Ham Lake Wednesday morning (June 5).

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Richard Allan McGill and Deanna Kaye McGill, both 71 years old.

Jay Terell Mottley of Maplewood was in critical condition when transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center after the accident, according to Cmdr. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. His current condition is unknown.

Sommer said nobody witnessed the crash on Lexington Avenue near Lever Street, but a passerby saw the smashed up vehicles and called 911 at 8:30 a.m. June 5. The accident is still under investigation.

The McGill’s were in a 2010 Ford Fusion and pronounced dead at the scene. Mottley had to be extricated by the Ham Lake Fire Department from his 2004 Toyota Hylander he was driving.

The Blaine Police Department and sheriff’s office also responded and had to put out a fire under the Toyota’s vehicle hood, but the fire itself did not get inside the vehicle, Sommer said.

A construction zone is nearby, but not in this area, he said.

The road was open to traffic and the roads were wet because of the rain, but otherwise the road conditions were good, Sommer said.
