Miss Coon Rapids 2013 Emily Kallis is competing at the annual Miss Minnesota Scholarship Pageant this week.
Kallis is among 22 young women vying for the title of 2013 Miss Minnesota and the chance to compete at the Miss America Scholarship Pageant.
Preliminary competition took place June 12 and 13 with the finals on Saturday, June 15, 7 p.m., in the Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center.
Kallis was at the June 4 Coon Rapids City Council meeting to receive a proclamation from Mayor Tim Howe naming her a “Coon Rapids Ambassador of Goodwill.”
She told the mayor that she is looking forward to the state pageant and representing Coon Rapids.
Competition at the state pageant includes talent – Kallis performs a dance – swimsuit, evening gown and a pre-pageant personal interview with the judges at which Kallis presents her platform.
Her platform is positive youth development, on which she has been making presentations in Coon Rapids to schools and community groups, Kallis said.
Kallis, who was born in Canada and is a dual citizen, graduated from Frazee High School and is a senior at Bethel University, St. Paul, majoring in organizational communication.
Her goal is to pursue a career in public relations or communications for a not-for-profit organization dealing with youth intervention and positive youth development.
