School’s out for summer – and kids are jumping in the pool, racing bicycles up and down the street, roasting marshmallows and shooting fireworks.

Offering tips to avoid summertime mishaps and prevent injuries, Allina Health Systems helped sponsor the annual Andover/Ham Lake Safety Camp June 11 and 12.

Some 145 nine- and 10-year-old children attended the camp, staged inside, outside and around the Andover YMCA.

Safety lessons were delivered by members of the Andover and Ham Lake fire departments; deputies, explorers and reserves from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office; safety experts from Safe Kids Anoka County and members of the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, as well as CLIMB Theatre performers.

Children learned bike handling skills, proper bicycling etiquette and the importance of wearing a bike helmet. They practiced bus safety, watched a drug sniffing dog in action, learned how to properly use a campfire and discovered ways to stop bullying.
