This map shows the neighborhood streets that will be closed during the Coon Rapids Fourth of July celebration parade Wednesday, July 3, and the detour route.

Sponsored by the Coon Rapids Fire Social Group, the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club and the Coon Rapids Community Strength Foundation, all activities take place at Sand Creek Park on Northdale Boulevard.

Highlights include the annual parade, which will be the evening of Wednesday, July 3, and the fireworks display scheduled for 10 p.m. Thursday, July 4.

While the midway is open at noon July 3, the parade is the real kick-off to the Fourth of July celebration.

It will take place, rain or shine, beginning and ending at Sand Creek Park.

Parade units will leave the park at 6 p.m. on 113th Avenue, then turn north on to Kumquat Street before taking a left on to Northdale Boulevard and returning to Sand Creek Park.

Diane Buszta, Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club member and parade chairperson, is anticipating some 60 units in the parade, she said.

That’s fewer than 2012, but there won’t be any politicians taking part in the parade because it is not an election year, according to Buszta.

“We had 12 politicians last year,” Buszta said.

There will be road closures from about 5:45 p.m. until the parade ends about 8 p.m. in the residential neighborhood the parade will pass through as well as on Northdale from Kumquat to the park, according to Capt. Cary Parks, Coon Rapids Police. The residential streets affected include 113th Avenue from Quince to Kumquat streets, 114th Avenue from Palm Street to Kumquat and Quince, Palm, Olive, Norway, Magnolia and Kumquat streets from 113th to Northdale.

A detour taking traffic from Northdale, north on Xeon Street to 121st Avenue  east to Foley Boulevard, then south on Foley back to Northdale will be in effect during the road closures, Parks said.

Besides the parade and fireworks, the Fourth of July celebration will feature bands on four nights, a car show, a two-day Crafts at the Creek event and a bean bag tournament.

The Splatter Sisters will entertain July 3 during and after the parade, while The Kill-a-Brews will perform before and after the fireworks July 4. On stage Friday, July 5, will be Shag, while The Arcades will play Saturday, July 6. All concerts are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The fourth annual Crafts at the Creek event, sponsored by the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club, will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 6 and 7, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. There will be free admission to the craft booths that will be set up at Sand Creek Park.

The Lions Club is also sponsoring the second annual car show 6-11 p.m. Saturday, July 6. Hot rods and classics, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, will be on display on one of the park’s softball fields. There is a $5 per car donation to the Anoka County Brotherhood Council Food Shelf.

The drivers of the first 50 cars in the show receive a free T-shirt.

Also planned is a bean bag tournament Thursday, July 4 on Field 2 at the park with team check-in at 1 p.m. and a 2 p.m. start to the tournament.

Teams can comprise two to four players of any gender, but participants must be 18 and older.

Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams and based on the number of teams entered.

To enter, contact tournament director Ryan Gunderson at 763-767-6513 or email RGunderson@coonrapidsmn.gov.

The midway will be open at noon July 3-6, while the firefighters will have bingo and pull-tabs each day July 3-6, starting at 3 p.m. July 3, at noon July 4 and at 2 p.m. July 5 and 6.

Members of the North Star Lions Club will also be manning the concession stand at the park throughout the celebration.
