Coon Rapids Legion getting new roof

The Coon Rapids American Legion Post on Crooked Lake Boulevard will be getting a new roof.

Prior to the ceremony to install its officers for the 2013-2014 year June 27, the Legion membership approved a contract totaling some $69,000 to replace the existing roof, which has been leaking for some time.

According to Tom Bohlman, who chairs the building committee, the contractor hired for the job is All Elements Inc.

The project will start the first week of September and take a week to complete, Bohlman said.

As part of the contract, the Legion has to make a downpayment of half the cost, he said.

“We have raised enough money to do that,” Bohlman said.

Meanwhile, fundraisers continue to take place to help pay off the rest of the project cost. Two events are planned for July.

“We continue to have garbage cans placed inside all around the place catching the water, so we definitely need to do something in a hurry,” said Anne Steffen, Coon Rapids American Legion Ladies Auxiliary member. “Any support we can get from the community would be very helpful and appreciated.”

The first fundraiser is the “Raise the Roof” summer bash Saturday, July 13, and the second is a “Laugh On the Roof Benefit Comedy Show,” which is set for Saturday, July 20.

The July 13 event starts at noon with a pig roast, which will include barbecue pork sandwiches, homemade baked beans, cole slaw, pickle spears and cold draft beer.

In addition, the Coon Rapids American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be having a bake sale.

And from 4-8 p.m. Mick James and the Flames, a 1960s rock ’n’ roll band, will be performing at the Legion.

All proceeds from the event will go to the roof replacement fund. Gift donations can be made payable to American Legion 334 with “Roof Fund” written in the check memo.

The following Saturday, July 20, Roger Peterson, the new club manager at the Legion, will be presenting a comedy show at 8 p.m.

Peterson produced and performed comedy shows in Albuquerque, N.M., and has continued to perform since relocating to the Twin Cities area. But this is his first production in Minnesota and all the proceeds will go to the Legion post’s roof replacement fund.

Peterson will headline the show with his Rodney Dangerfield set.

According to Peterson, he has been doing Dangerfield for more than 30 years and saw the late comedian perform live on three different occasions.

He likes to perform as Dangerfield not only to keep his memory alive but also to introduce him to younger people who may not know him and to provide guests with a feel for what he was like as a performer, Peterson said.

The show will also feature Dale Nusbaum and Karen J. Larson.

Nusbaum is a regular at comedy clubs, most recently in Rochester, as well as the Joke Joint.

Larson is a regular on KFAI’s “The Lennie Chism Show.”

No one under the age 18 will be admitted because the material may contain some adult language and situations.

Advance VIP tickets for tables of eight are $70 and advanced single VIP tickets cost $10.

At the door, a VIP table of eight is $100 and $15 for a single ticket.

Advance general admission tickets are $7 or $10 at the door.

To purchase tickets, contact Peterson at 763-421-6260 (office) or 505-401-6557 (cell).
