The second of two free Movie in the Park events this year will take place on softball field 2 in Sand Creek Park, Coon Rapids, Friday, Aug. 9.
The animated movie, “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” will be screened.
Kids’ activities begin at 6 p.m. for a nominal fee and the movie will be shown beginning at dusk about 8:30 p.m.
A computer-animated family film produced by DreamWorks, “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012 and is the third installment of the “Madagascar” series.
It was released nationally June 8 to critical and commercial success. According to Wikipedia, it is the best-reviewed film of the series and the highest grossing “Madagascar” film worldwide.
Among the actors voicing the characters in the movie are Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Barin Cohen, Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Martin Short and Francis McDormand.
Running time is 93 minutes.
The concession stand at Sand Creek Park will open at 6 p.m. and be operated by the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club.
Proceeds from the concession stand benefit the Coon Rapids Community Strength Foundation, which is sponsoring the event with the city. The foundation, which helps support the Fourth of July fireworks display and other community activities, was the idea of Mayor Tim Howe and was formed in 2011, bringing together representatives of community/civic groups under one umbrella as well as representatives of the city.
The foundation is operated exclusively for charitable purposes, promoting Coon Rapids “through civic celebrations, the arts and healthy community building events and activities,” according to its articles of incorporation.
The foundation’s revenue don’t come from the taxpayers, but rather from the annual Twin Cities Gateway grant to the city and 90 percent of the 5 percent the city gets from local charitable gambling license holders as well as proceeds from concession stand sales by the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club at community events.
