Griesgraber notches Twin Cities Senior Championship at Bunker Hills

Bob Griesgraber carded a 2-under par 70 July 31 to win the 22nd Twin Cities Senior Championship at Bunker Hills Golf Club.

Griesgraber, Hillcrest Golf Club, wins the championship for the second time since 2004.

Griesgraber bogeyed the second hole, but responded with a birdie on the fourth to get back to even. He made par on the next four holes before dropping to 1-under with a birdie on the eighth hole.

On the back nine, Griesgraber made par on the first four holes to stay at 1-under before a birdie on the 14th hole put him at 2-under.

Griesgraber would give a stroke back on the very next hole with a bogey, but a birdie on the 16th hole put him in the clubhouse at 2-under 70.

“The key today was I drove the ball in the fairway; I got in a little jam on No. 2, but otherwise I hit almost every other fairway,” Griesgraber said. “I didn’t putt that well—I don’t think anyone did. The greens were a little bumpy but I didn’t make a three putt once today.”

“I had zero expectations coming into today. With the way I’ve been playing lately, I’m very happy with the way today’s round turned out,”

Griesgraber said. Jon Empanger, Island View Golf Club, finished just one shot behind Griesgraber at 1-under par 71 to finish alone in second place.

Empanger played flawlessly for 18 holes as he made nine pars on the front nine to make the turn at even par. His consistent play continued as he made par on the first five holes of the back nine before a birdie on the 15th dropped him to 1-under for the round. He would finish his round with three consecutive pars and carded a 1-under par 71.

“I played well tee to green but I didn’t make much as far as putts go; I don’t think I made anything over three feet,” Empanger said. “The driver worked best for me today; I only missed one fairway all day.”

“I was happy with the way I played. Of course you’d rather finish on top, but I played well and I’m happy about that,” he said.

Leif Carlson, Hastings Country Club, and Skip Schultz, University Golf Course, finished tied for third at even par 72.
