A comedy show benefit for the roof replacement project at the Coon Rapids American Legion raised $750 July 20.
“There was a very good turnout, and we got positive feedback from everyone,” said Roger Peterson, Legion club manager.
Peterson, who produced the “Laugh on the Roof” comedy show, estimated the number of people at the Legion for the event to be between 120 and 130.
And Peterson, himself, was one of the three comedians who performed at the show. The others were Dale Nusbaum and Karen J. Larson.
Even though he has been producing and performing comedy shows for many years, not only in Minnesota but also in New Mexico, Peterson said he was nervous of flubbing his lines before he went on stage.
But the audience energized him with their laughter during his routine, and it was “one of the top performances I have given,” he said.
According to Peterson, given the response there could be another show at the Legion in the works for the future. But it will be different than this one, Peterson said.
All the proceeds from the show went to the roof replacement fund. In June, Legion membership approved a contract totaling $69,000 to put a new roof on the building and make a down payment on half the contract amount. The current roof has been leaking in several places for some time.
Work on the new roof is scheduled to start the first week of September and take a week to complete.
Fundraising continues to pay off the balance of the contract cost.
The week before the comedy show, the Legion hosted a pig roast and rock and roll concert, while the Coon Rapids American Legion Ladies Auxiliary had a bake sale.
