Despite coming up short in both games at the state legion baseball tournament, St. Francis American Legion Post 622 still went out on top this summer.
Post 622 won the sub-state district 13 as the No. 2 seed behind top-seed Princeton which concluded July 28.
St. Francis knew the path at the division 1 state tourney would be tough with fourth-ranked Eden Prairie in the opener.
Eden Prairie handed Post 622 a 13-1 loss at Chanhassen High School in the opening round of the 16-team, double-elimination formatted tournament, Aug. 2.
Post 622 could only muster six hits while the defense was tagged with five errors. Eden Prairie opened the game up with an 11-run third inning after St. Francis scored its lone run in the top of the second inning.
Mahtomedi ended St. Francis’ season with a 4-1 loss in the second game Friday.
Post 622 got on the board with one run in the bottom of the ninth while the team was limited to six hits and the defense made three errors in the field.
Edina hosted the tournament, which was played at four sites including Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Richfield and Edina.
Coon Rapids Post 334
Coon Rapids ended its season with a 14-3 loss to Chester Bird, made up of Benilde-St. Margaret’s players, at Wintercrest July 29. Post 334 lost its first game of the double-elimination tournament to Spring Lake Park July 24 before winning five games before ending the season with a 26-12 record.
Anoka Post 102
Anoka was bounced with back-to-back losses to Osseo, 8-7, and Maple Grove, 7-6 July 27 after opening with a 7-0 win against Excelsior.
