There were tables and chairs set up both inside the VFW hall and on the grounds outside for people to eat their picnic lunch of hot dogs, desserts and beverages.

Outside, there were areas set aside for children’s games and for children to have their faces painted, as well as tables for adults to buy pull tabs and raffle tickets.

The Coon Rapids VFW Ladies Auxiliary also had information available for its annual style show and silent auction fundraiser coming up in October.

Special activities during the picnic included a Coon Rapids Police Department canine demonstration, a Coon Rapids fire engine for youngsters to explore and a dog training program put on by Stone Mountain Pet Lodge in Blaine.

In addition, Mary Hawkins, Coon Rapids VFW Auxiliary president, presented a $15 prize to Sienna Rose VanBellinger, 6, who took first place in an Americanism coloring contest sponsored by the Department of Minnesota VFW Auxiliary for children in kindergarten through third grade.

Sienna is the daughter of VFW Auxiliary member Heather Kath VanBellinger, who is an art teacher at Farmington High School and recently placed second in an art competition during Prior Lake Lakefront Days.
