Super sectional losses end Redbirds season

The 2013 season came to a close for the Coon Rapids Redbirds at the super sectional round played at Victoria Aug. 16-17.

The Section 8B champion Redbirds lost both games by a combined score of 15-1.

Coon Rapids was held to five hits in a 12-1 loss to Victoria Aug. 16 before Sauk Rapids shutout Coon Rapids 3-0 in the elimination game the following day. The Vics went on to beat St. Michael 2-1 to earn a spot in the Class B State Tournament, while St. Michael topped Sauk Rapids 4-2 to secure the second position to reach state.

Kean Paxton had two hits against the Vics, but Redbirds pitcher Andrew Driessen, who got the start, took his first loss of the season (9-1), giving up five earned runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Driessen is a junior at UW-Stout and was the Redbirds’ ace with a 1.69 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 50 strikeouts that tied Steve Schroer for the team lead.

Sauk Rapids scored once in the six, seventh and eighth innings to pull out the super sectional win, while Coon Rapids struggled to string together hits. The Redbirds only had four hits against Sauk Rapids from Dan Skog, Jake Poehler, Craig Henry and Jake Paulson. Poehler and Paulson each stole one base.

Schroer pitched a complete-game loss, giving up three runs on six hits with two walks and five strike outs. Schroer finished the season 2-5. He started 10 times and pitched in 13 games to record a 2.55 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 50 strikeouts, which made him the all-time strikeout leader for the club.

Poehler had 55 hits and a .382 batting average this season after posting 50 hits and a .325 average in 2012. He tied Aaron Lindstrom for the team lead in RBI with 35. Lindstrom and Zach Sather each had two home runs to tie for the team high.
