Dirigibles, kites, gliders float through the air

Twirling dirigibles, flying rotor kites and fling-a-rings floated through the air inside Coon Rapids Senior Center Aug. 14 when Mad Science presented Fantastic Flyers.

The event – billed as an “End of Summer Blast” – closed the summer Wacky Wednesdays season of inter-generational activities at the senior center for children and their grandparents.

Other summertime midweek events included In the Jungle games, crafts, snacks, Minute to Win It contests and more.

For Fantastic Flyers, 35 children and 20 grandparents filled the room to capacity as they followed in the footsteps of the Wright brothers, learning about aircraft and the four forces that affect flight.

Then, with carefully creased and precisely angled sheets of paper, children and their grandparents constructed custom-made paper airplanes.

Wacky Wednesdays, with activities designed for children four to 14 years old, is an annual event offered at Coon Rapids Senior Center.

“It’s always a nice time,’ said Mary Moriarty, who brought five grandchildren to Wacky Wednesday’s Aug. 14 event.

“The kids learn something new and I get to spend time with them doing something  different. It’s fun and it’s such a blessing,”
