Creatively coordinating kale, culantro, orchids and fresh arrangements with pine and red, white and green flowers, Forever Floral managed to craft a scene from Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
So appealing was the floral depiction of the Grinch’s holiday stealth that it stole the Minnesota State Florist Association Floralpalooza People’s Choice Award at the Minnesota State Fair last week.
“We found out in early spring that we were invited to exhibit in the new horticulture building (at the state fair). That’s a pretty big honor to be invited. And we were the only suburban shop, so that makes it even more an honor,” said Jackie Bockwitz, master floral designer and owner of Forever Floral in Coon Rapids.
The invitation to exhibit included an invitation to compete for the Floralpalooza People’s Choice honors. With Dr. Seuss books the assigned theme, Bockwitz and her design team could choose any Dr. Seuss book from which to create a scene.
“We chose ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and I can’t count the number of hours spent planning, designing, ordering product and building (the exhibit),” Bockwitz said, reviewing Forever Floral’s pre-fair preparation.
The floral design team teamed up with Rustic Way artist Dan Pauly of Elk River, who built the shed for the scene. Other highlights of the Grinch scene included the Grinch himself, of course, as well as little Cindy Lou Who, Max the dog and the town Christmas tree.
“It was a lot of fun – a lot of work, a lot of planning, but a whole lot of fun, too,” said Bockwitz.
The fun and the work continued during the 12-day long great Minnesota get-together as Bockwitz and her team visited the exhibit every day of the fair to water, to tweak and to primp the display.
The Floralpalooza People’s Choice Award joins dozens of other awards earned by Forever Floral designers, among them state and national designer of the year awards.
Forever Floral is located at 11427 Foley Blvd., Coon Rapids.
