Coon Rapids Police Explorer program seek new recruits

Recruitment night for the Coon Rapids Police Explorer program will take place Sunday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m., at the Coon Rapids City Center.

The Coon Rapids Police Department’s Explorer program is an opportunity for young adults interested in learning about a career in law enforcement.

Explorers take part in scenario-based training, assist with community service events, attend state law enforcement explorer conferences and ride along with patrol officers, according to Coon Rapids Police Officer Adam Jacobson, program coordinator.

At the three-day statewide competition at Breezy Point near Brainerd, explorers are taught and tested on police skills.

Every other year explorers attend a national conference.

Members also have the opportunity to apply for and earn scholarship money, Jacobson said.

Requirements to be accepted into the program include:

• Be 14 to 20 years old and have completed eighth grade.

• Maintain a “C” or better grade-point average.

• Submit to a background investigation.

• Participate in an oral interview.

• Attend weekly meetings.
