September 9, 2013 Regular Meeting-7:00 p.m. Central Services Center-Community Room 4115 Ambassador Blvd.
The regular meeting was called to order by Chairperson Amy Kelly at 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Directors David Anderson, Suzanne Erkel, Janet Glover, Harry Grams, David Roberts, Marsha Van Denburgh, and Superintendent Ed Saxton.
Site Report- St. Francis Middle school
Principal Mr. Johnson and Assistant Principal Ms. Hume reviewed last year and current year goals. Goals focused on student connections including personal, programming, and student data development. Q Comp math goals were reviewed by grade level, with the sixth grade exceeding the goal bringing the building-wide increase to 4.3% overall. In reading, scores dropped. Q Comp goal for next year is to increase scores by 3% at each grade level and continue with bullying prevention.
Happening Around the District- Captains of 1977 and 2013 Football Teams Mr. Ferguson introduced Dave Walton and Corey Gilbertson, all three were captains of the St. Francis High School 1977 football team. The 1977 team went to semi finals in state competition and held the record for most points scored (63) in a football game. The 2013 Saints football team broke the 36 year old record, scoring 64 points in the game against Duluth East.
Consideration of visitors
Ms. Scheiber and Ms. Junker, St. Francis High School Spanish teachers, addressed the
School Board regarding a cultural and Spanish emersion proposed trip for students to study in Guatemala in 2014.
Mr. May inquired about District policy for students bringing their own lunch and/or snack.
Motion was made by Mr. Anderson and second by Ms. van Denburgh.
Motion carried, 7-0.
Consent Agenda
Motion was made to approve the revised Consent Agenda by Mr. Grams and second by Ms.
A. That the minutes of August 26 be approved as presented.
B. THAT the Personnel Items be approved as presented.
C. THAT Disbursements are approved as presented.
D. That Gift Acknowledgements be approved as presented.
E. THAT the Contract- Edmentum be approved as presented.
Motion carried 7-0.
Reports Student Cassy Stierns and Natasha Taylor provided the student report.
Superintendent Report and Communications
hMr. Saxton acknowledged the passing of Gary Christofferson, Education Minnesota Union field representative.
hA field trip to Cedar Creek Community school to see the new entrance to the building and the acceleration lab.
hOpen houses were well attended.
hBack to school event went well.
hA grant with the Alexander House was received this year.
hA review of the delay and glitch in distribution of transportation postcards to families was given.
hNutrition Services meals follow federal regulations under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. Handout of federal regulations was distributed.
hMinnesota School Boards Association delegate ballots should be completed by school Board members and returned to Ms. Kowitz for mailing.
hwill be meeting with the commissioner from the Department of Education to discuss ISD 15s technology integration plan and the new innovation zone.
Dialogue Session
No one attended.
School Board Member Reports
School Board members provided reports and comment on the following: open houses, received calls regarding bus routes, contracting additional buses, kindergarten, lunches, condolences to the Christofferson family, met with a representative from Lions Club, negotiation meetings, SFHS freshman orientation, SFHS football games, when Mr. Saxtons goals will be on the agenda, welcome to Mr. Neubauer, and ISD 15 welcome Back staff.
Administrative Reports
Transportation- Mr. Saxton is working with elementary sites to be similar in their dismissal times.
Kindergarten Update- Mr. saxton will have more details after the budget process. Last year planning was based on projections, staffing was adjusted according to the need at each elementary site.
Open Houses
Mr. Ferguson attended 11 open houses, cabinet members were present at schools at the beginning and end of the first day showing support to teachers and students by being present. He will attend the Anoka Ramsey community College Advisory committee meeting, and the American Indian Education parent group meeting.
