Kookies Penny Drive kicks off

As school bells ring in a brand new school year, Eisenhower Elementary School’s Kookies Penny Drive kicks into high gear.

The monthly collection of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters – and an occasional dollar or two – serves as fundraiser for local groups and organizations.

A collection jug is placed in the cafeteria where students and staff put their spare change. A collection meter on a cafeteria doorway monitors the monthly progress.

Each month, representatives of the benefiting group serve lunch to students filing through the lunch line and hungry for a nutritious meal.

September’s drive benefits the Coon Rapids Police Department, while October’s goes to the Coon Rapids Fire Department and others will boost the funds of local Lions groups, the senior center, the Christmas committee, local food shelves and more.

Patty Sathre, Eisenhower child nutrition site supervisor, has organized the penny drive at the school since 2007.
