Masterpiece Book Club, which meets the second Tuesday afternoon of every month at the Coon Rapids Senior Center from 1-3 p.m., will focus on the books of Charles Dickens in 2014.
Club facilitator Jim Bofenkamp calls Dickens “the greatest of all British novelists.”
The reading and discussion schedule includes “Oliver Twist” (January), “Nicholas Nickleby” (February), “The Old Curiosity Shop” (March), “Barnaby Rudge” (April), “Martin Chuzzlewit” (May), “Dombey And Son” (June), “David Copperfield” (July), “Bleak House” (August), “Little Dorrit” (September), “A Tale Of Two Cities (October), “Great Expectations” (November) and “Our Mutual Friend” (December).
Each month’s discussion will be facilitated by a different member of the book club, according to Bofenkamp.
“During the coming year members of the book club will offer and vote on the titles that will make up our reading for the following year,” Bofenkamp said.
As an indication of the type of literature this method produces, last month the club read “Love In The Time Of Cholera” (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) and in September, the club discussed “Babbitt (Sinclair Lewis), he said.
“We will finish out this year with Evelyn Waugh’s “A Handful Of Dust” (October), Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” (November) and Sebastian Faulks’ “Birdsong” (December),” Bofenkamp said.
The club currently has openings for three new members. Call Bofenkamp at 763-754-0117.
