Man pleads guilty to assault of boy in Coon Rapids motel

A man has pleaded guilty to a felony charge in Anoka County District Court for assaulting a two-year-old at Coon Rapids motel.

In a plea agreement Sept. 16, Deryl Edward Young, Jr., 34, entered a guilty plea to one of two felony counts of malicious punishment of a child.

The second felony charge of malicious punishment of a child, as well as misdemeanor domestic assault, will be dismissed at sentencing Nov. 14.

Young remains free after posting $150,000 bail, but there is a domestic no contact order in place and he was ordered by the court to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

According to the complaint, officers were called to a room at the Inn Town Suites, 420 Coon Rapids Blvd., shortly after 7 p.m. April 7, 2012 where a woman, 28, reported that she had seen Young stomp on the boy’s head and face while the boy was laying face down on the floor.

When the woman tried to intervene, she said that Young punched her in the face about three or four times.

She told another child in the room to go downstairs to the front desk of the motel and ask staff to call the police, at which point the man left in a white Toyota Previa van, the Coon Rapids Police report states.

According to the complaint, when the woman picked up the boy, she saw that he had several bloody red marks on his face, which she believed were caused by Young whipping him with an electrical cord.

The complaint states that police officers observed and photographed several blood red marks on the boy’s face, a cut lip which was swollen and that his back was covered with dozens of scars consistent with being whipped many, many times.

The woman had a scratch on her face and a cut on her right ear.

Both the boy and his mother were taken to the hospital for treatment.

An electrical cord found in the room was taken into evidence, according to the Coon Rapids Police report.
