Minnesota junior forward Rachel Bona, a Coon Rapids High School graduate, has been named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after recording seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the Gophers to a series sweep of Colgate University last weekend.
Bona leads the nation with 3.50 points per game after her two-game, seven-point effort against the Raiders. She is tied for the national lead in goals per game (2.00) and game-winning goals (2). Bona also is tied for eighth with 1.50 assists per game.
Against Colgate, Bona’s four goals included both game-winners and one unassisted short-handed tally. She finished the weekend with a +7 rating and 10 shots.
Friday, Bona led Minnesota to a 3-1 win, contributing to all three Gopher goals (two goals, one assist). She recorded an assist on Minnesota’s first goal of the season, setting up Hannah Brandt to tie the game at 15:21 of the first period after Colgate took a 1-0 lead. Bona then scored the game-winner 2:15 into the third period before adding an insurance goal with an unassisted short-handed tally with 1:51 remaining in the game. She was +3 for the game with five shots.
Saturday, Bona scored two goals on five shots and added two assists while finishing the game at +4 as the Gophers beat Colgate 8-3. She scored the game-winner at 19:29 of the first period. Bona added her second goal of the game at 3:41 of the second period. She also posted two assists on Minnesota’s second and fifth goals of the game.
Bona tied her career-game high with two goals in each game and tied her career high for points in a game with four on Saturday. Her seven points in the series was a career best as well.
Bona and the top-ranked Gophers host No. 4/6 Wisconsin in Minnesota’s home-opening series this weekend. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday.
