A new pool and a new program for the students of District 16 schools this year is swimming which becomes part of the schedule along with the regular curricular activities.

Blaine NHS to sell Halloween insurance

Worried about Halloween vandalism? If you live in Blaine and certain parts of Andover and Ham Lake, you can get Halloween insurance for $1 from the Blaine National Honor Society (NHS).

If you purchase the insurance ahead of time, NHS students will clean up damage to your property from toilet papering, egging, smashed pumpkins, soaped windows, misuse of plastic ware and any other cleanable substance misused on your property between Oct. 26 through Nov. 2.

Aveda, Yawanawa tribe work together

Working to create products that are beneficial to the environment is at the core of the Aveda Corporation in Blaine.

While the company specializes in developing pure plant- and flower-based cosmetics, Aveda has taken its environmental cause one step further by developing a partnership with an indigenous tribe in the Brazilian rainforest.

The Yawanawa tribe will grow bixa, a traditional red coloring used for tribal ceremonies. Inside the pods are a powdered coloring, which is what Aveda will use in its natural cosmetics.
