Coon Rapids man sent to prison for 12 child porn convictions

A Coon Rapids man, who pleaded guilty in Anoka County District Court to 12 felony charges involving child pornography, has been sent to prison.

Daniel Lawrence Kennedy, 26, entered guilty pleas in late August to five counts of using minors in sexual performance – pornographic work; two counts of disseminating pornographic work; and five counts of possessing pornographic work on a computer disk.

At sentencing Oct. 23, Anoka County District Court Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick gave Kennedy concurrent, rather than consecutive, prison sentences on all 12 counts, ranging from 110 months to 24 months.

According to court records, Kennedy will be conditionally released from prison after five years.

He is required to register as a predatory offender and supply a DNA sample.

One second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge was dismissed at sentencing.

The investigation by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division began in late May when a report was received that Kennedy had taken nude photographs of a 12-year-old girl and paid her to do so, according to the complaint.

In an interview with investigators June 4, the girl stated she posed for nude photos taken in November 2012 while Kennedy was caring for her at her home and he paid her $100 in $5 bills a week later.

She also stated that in early to mid-May this year, she had gone with Kennedy to the Coon Rapids Goodwill store where he asked her if she wanted to earn more money for photographs.

When she agreed, he gave her his camera and she went a changing room and took partially nude photos of herself.

She then returned the camera to Kennedy, but she did not get paid for those photos.

According to the girl’s statement, Kennedy always had the same camera with him and transferred the pictures to his computer or a thumb drive.

The girl’s mother verified that Kennedy frequently had his camera with him, that he had numerous unsupervised contacts with the girl in the fall of 2012 and that they had gone to Goodwill together in May.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Kennedy’s home and seized the camera, several thumb drives and a computer.

One of the thumb drive files contained several nude photographs and videos of the girl.

In a post-Miranda statement, Kennedy admitted paying the girl $100 to take photos of her nude in November 2012 and he had also made video recordings of her as well as taking pictures in states of undress when she did not know he was doing so.

He also admitted sharing the photos of the girl with other people via email.

Kennedy said in his statement that he was in possession of over 3,000 images of child pornography and 250 child pornography videos.

According to the complaint, while conducting an analysis of Kennedy’s computer, investigators found several digital color videos several minutes in length of child pornography involving prepubescent girls and, in one of the five images outlined in the complaint, a toddler.

In addition, detectives in further analysis of Kennedy’s thumb drives found that he used his Yahoo account to send photos of a full view of the girl’s cleavage, including the photo of the $20 bill in her bra, to another user April 23 and two video files of the girl two days later to the same user.
