Duck hunters overturn, rescued by deputies

Three shivering duck hunters, fighting for their lives when their boat overturned on Coon Lake Thursday were safe today following a dramatic rescue by two sheriff’s deputies and another man.

Chief Deputy Ray Baker and Investigator Ed Ward took the call that three duck hunters had overturned a great distance from shore on Coon Lake.

They dashed to Coon Lake, commandeered a 15-foot boat with a 40 horsepower motor and with Donald Knouse of Coon Lake accompanying them, took off at full speed toward the swamped victims.

They reached the men, steadied the boat and hauled in the cold, grateful hunters. They were taken to a house on shore to dry out and warm up on hot coffee.

 District 11 approves open enrollment

District 11 will implement the state mandated open enrollment plan for the 1989-90 school year, but under its own conditions.

The School Board adopted Monday an overall open enrollment policy for the district, which varies from Gov. Rudy Perpich’s original plan. Under Perpich’s plan, students can apply to attend any school they wish.

District 11’s plan states that students residing in District 11 will be granted priority in transferring from one attendance area to another within the district on a space available basis.

Furthermore a maximum number of transfer students will be established at each site for every program, and/or grade level at each site.
