A self-defense seminar for women will be offered by the city of Coon Rapids at the Coon Rapids Civic Center Saturday, Nov. 16, 9-11:30 a.m.
The seminar will provide an opportunity for participants to explore concerns unique to women.
The program will focus on practical ways that women can protect themselves and lessen their chances of becoming a victim.
There will be both discussion and the opportunity to learn physical techniques.
The instructor is Melynda (Mel) Nelson, who worked for close to a decade as a probation and parole agent supervising high-risk offenders.
Nelson has a master’s degree in forensic psychology and a black belt in Taekwondo plus a wide range of martial arts experience.
She currently works as a victims’ advocate directly serving victims of domestic and sexual violence.
The class is open to anyone age 16 and older, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Attendees should wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
The class costs $15. Registration is being accepted in person at the Coon Rapids Civic Center between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The registration form can also be mailed along with a check made payable to “City of Coon Rapids” to Coon Rapids Civic Center, Attn: Recreation Class, 11155 Robinson Dr. NW., Coon Rapids, MN. 55433.
The class will take place in the civic center training room.
