The annual Miss Coon Rapids Scholarship Pageant takes place Saturday, Nov. 23, 7 p.m., in the auditorium of Coon Rapids High School.
This will be the second year that the pageant has been in November, rather than during Coon Rapids Snowflake Days in early February as in the past.
The switch in dates has been made primarily to allow the new Miss Coon Rapids more time to prepare for the Miss Minnesota Scholarship Pageant, which takes place each year in June. The Miss Minnesota winner advances to the Miss America Scholarship Pageant.
In tandem with the Miss Coon Rapids Pageant Nov. 23, the pageant committee is also sponsoring the annual Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen Pageant, whose winner also goes on to state competition.
Prior to the pageant, the Miss Coon Rapids contestants will take part in the annual brunch, silent auction and style show Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Coon Rapids American Legion.
The silent auction starts at 9 a.m. with brunch at 9:30 a.m. and the style show to follow.
Pageant contestants, along with Miss Coon Rapids 2013 Emily Kallis, will model clothes from Maurice’s and Dress Barn.
The cost is $20 with proceeds going to pageant scholarships. For tickets call Teda at 763-670-8212.
The Miss Coon Rapids and Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen pageants are “open” pageants.
Candidates must live, work or go to school within the state to participate. Proof of residency or college enrollment is required.
There are five competition areas – talent worth 35 percent of the total score, judges interview 25 percent, evening wear 20 percent, lifestyle and fitness in a swimsuit 15 percent and on-stage question 5 percent.
As part of the 10-minute press conference style interview with the pageant judges, contestants present a platform on an issue or program of their own choosing.
Eligibility for the Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen Pageant is a young woman between the ages of 13 and 17 living in or going to school in Minnesota.
Contestants are judged in six areas – private interview 30 percent of the score, scholastic achievement 5 percent, on-stage question, 5 percent, lifestyle and fitness 10 percent, talent 35 percent and personal appearance and poise in evening wear 15 percent.
