Break of Reality, a cello rock band from New York, has created a Kickstarter campaign, an online-based crowd-sourcing platform that allows artists to fundraise for specific projects, to raise money for a music education tour around the country.
The band has partnered with 12 high schools to give free educational workshops and free public concerts in April and May 2014 in hopes of raising awareness for music education in public schools.
The band’s proposed tour would bring it to Coon Rapids where its members would work with music students at Coon Rapids High School May 14, 2014.
In addition to giving free educational workshops for students, Break of Reality would also perform a free evening concert, open to the public, where the band would take donations at the door.
All of these donations would go to the music program at Coon Rapids High School to purchase new instruments, repair old instruments and invest in new technology for its music rooms.
If the tour is funded, the concert will take place in the school’s auditorium on the evening of May 14, 2014.
Break of Reality has given hundreds of educational workshops and performances since the band formed in 2003.
Cellist and founding member Patrick Laird has always been passionate about giving back to the music programs where he got his start, he said.
“While growing up, the other members of Break of Reality and I had very supportive public school music programs,” Laird said. “If it weren’t for those programs, we wouldn’t have continued on to start our band and ultimately become professional musicians.”
Break of Reality needs to raise $48,000 in order to make the tour happen. This will cover the tour’s many expenses, including travel from New York to Texas to California to Chicago, and many places in between.
“We’re passionate about music education and would love to make this tour a reality,” Laird said.
The band is seeking support from the Coon Rapids community to reach its goal. Incentives for giving to the project range from signed copies of the band’s albums to having the band play an acoustic concert in the donor’s home.
Break of Reality, originally formed at the Eastman School of Music in 2003, has given hundreds of performances across the country at performing arts centers, colleges, rock clubs and music festivals, such as South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
Along with performing, the group has written and performed original music that has been featured in national television programs, including “Dateline NBC” and “America’s Investigative Reports” on PBS, which went on to win an Emmy.
Break of Reality has released three albums to date, “The Sound Between” (2006), “Spectrum of the Sky” (2009) and “Covers” (2012), which have sold over 50,000 copies worldwide. Its upcoming album, “Ten,” will be released in March 2014.
