Union Looking Back for Dec. 20, 2013

Records smashed

December; lovely, warm, balmy December! Friends away out in California, listen. The first skating on the river came Thursday. The river didn’t freeze at all ‘till Dec. 7 and it didn’t freeze hard enough to hold a person ‘till Dec. 18th. There is no snow, and the Union learns from R.W. Field at the Lincoln mill, that the record of temperature has been unequaled as far as any records that have been kept are concerned.

Store windows bring message of the season

Anoka merchants vie with one another in Christmas decorations. Amidst a definite juvenile array of very interesting and lovely to look at children’s furniture pieces, were red and green streamers with tinsel hanging in Thurston’s windows. Freeburg Bros. on Jackson street have their windows encurtained in red and green with brilliantly colored wreaths overspread with poinsettia against the display of coal and flour. Stathis’ Candy Shop has an attractive window in which is displayed their home made candy canes as well as other delicious candies. A clever display of jewelry and most acceptable gifts can be seen in the Smith jewelry store window. The Red & White store has a striking figure of the old Saint himself with his bag filled practically to capacity with gifts and resting himself by the fireplace from which he has just descended and by which is a large tree laden with gifts.

‘Tis the season to be jolly

For some merrymakers, ‘tis the season to overindulge. So in an effort to keep drunken drivers off the road, the Golden Valley Health Center and AAA Clubs of Minnesota will once again participate in the SoberCab programs. This is the sixth year that SoberCab has been a part of the holiday season, but only the second year the program has been offered in southern Anoka County.
